Residence Permits in Turkey (2025 Guide)

How Foreigners Can Legally Stay in Turkey Beyond Their Visa Period

Foreign nationals who want to live, study, retire, invest or stay in Turkey longer than their visa allows must obtain a residence permit.
This updated 2025 guide explains the types of residence permits, eligibility rules, required documents, application steps and renewal procedures.

1. What Is a Residence Permit?

A visa or visa exemption allows short-term stays—usually up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
A residence permit allows foreigners to legally stay in Turkey beyond the visa period and is applied for inside Turkey through the official system:

e-İkamet: https://e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr

2. Who Must Apply for a Residence Permit?

  • Must be renewed before your permit expires

  • Recommended renewal time: 60 days before expiry

  • Done online through e-İkamet

  • Updated documents (insurance, address proof, income, etc.) are required

7. If Your Application Is Refused or Your Permit Expires

A residence permit can be refused or cancelled due to:

  • Missing or incorrect documents

  • Using the permit for the wrong purpose

  • Security or public order concerns

If refused:

  • You may be required to leave Turkey within a set period

  • You may re-apply after the waiting period

  • You have the right to appeal or take legal action when appropriate

If your permit expires before renewal:

  • Overstay fines

  • Possible entry bans

  • Difficulties in future applications

Strictly following deadlines is extremely important.

8. Important Note: A Residence Permit Is Not a Work Permit

A residence permit allows you to stay, but it does NOT allow you to work.
To legally work in Turkey, a separate work permit is required — except in limited exceptions (e.g., some special statuses).
